The Secret to Seeing God Move in Your Life

Can I confess something to you?

Most weeks I have no idea what I’m going to write about here. I have an inkling, a spark or inspiration, and even a list of ideas. But pre-planned blog posts? A pipe dream. Even when I settle on an idea, more often than not, the process of transforming that idea into something palatable and interesting is an agonizing task.

My process is usually the same. Come up with a clever title. Stew and stew and stew over the content. Pace the room. Stew some more. It’s only after all of this stewing and then bumping up against my deadline (every other Tuesday) that I remember how I’ve done it so many times before.

That is, by asking God for help.

You’d think I’d remember it earlier in the process, that I would write it down or something, but usually I forget. There have been more than a few times that, after writing an article or chapter that I wonder, How did I do that?

So if you’ve ever been impressed, delighted, or moved by even a single phrase I’ve written, know that it wasn’t of my own power but by the power of God. Without God I’m just a giant ball of writers’ block.

Had I more faith, I would remember to ask God for His intervention from the start rather than attempting to go it alone. I would believe that God would assist me rather than despairing at every obstacle.

Maybe my problem, and maybe yours too, is not that I’m too distant from God, but that I’m too familiar. After all, I spend time in the Word and in prayer nearly every day of every week. And after quiet time I sit down and write about faith, prayer, and the Bible.

Maybe we’re taking God’s power, wisdom, and general awesomeness for granted?

How to See Miracles

During Jesus’s ministry He did many miracles, and, as a result, His fame spread throughout Judea. Hordes started following Him like groupies following their favorite band on tour. But when He came to his hometown and started teaching, the people who knew Jesus and his family took offense. And you know what the gospel tells us? It says that Jesus "did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith” (Matt. 13:58).

The Nazarenes were familiar with Jesus. They had seen Him grow up from a young child into a man. They knew His parents and siblings. Yet they had never seen Him perform any miracles. So when Jesus returned to Nazareth in the middle of His ministry, they scoffed at His claims until He would perform a miracle.

They essentially said, “We won’t believe you until you perform a sign.” But they got things backward. Jesus didn’t perform miracles because of their lack of faith.

I think sometimes we get familiar with Jesus—with the stories of His miracles and his power—but we’ve yet to see it firsthand. Or we have seen it firsthand and have taken it for granted. So we reserve belief until we see something happen in our lives.

But you see the secret to seeing God move in your life is to believe that He will. If you get stuck searching for a job, stuck in a negative cycle of bad habits, or just need something in your life to change, you need not only to ask for a miracle but also to believe He can perform it.

Because if you lack faith, God’s not going to do many miracles.

  1. It's so easy to get busy and take God's work in our daily lives for granted. And then I read, "In HIM we live and move and have our being," and am reminded that He is constant and truly awesome... and my belief grows. Good post, Andrew.
