  1. I finished your book, Do No Work, this afternoon. The title caught my eye on a Christian Book Finds site and it was so reasonable in price, I couldn't resist buying it. You see, our auditorium S.S. teacher insists that there are only nine commandments that apply to the Christian. I disagree. You and I agree but you give many more foundational reasons. Thank you for your diligent research and study and now I finally also feel free to sometimes work out in my yard on a Sunday afternoon because I am retired and often take other whole days of rest during the week! Thank you again. I also adhere to your comment on taking theological advice. Always trust the Word of God but not always the words of mankind.
I intend on writing a book review for my blog site sometimes this week on your book so I can recommend it to others.

  2. I just finished reading your book. It challenged my understanding of Sabbath. I wish you would have commanded more on chasing kids part:) I try to take a mini Sabbath on Monday when kids are off to school. Thanks for writing this book.

  3. I appreciated your insight in this book, but was still a little confused about the Sunday versus Saturday issue....you seem to acknowlege Saturday as Sabbath, but build a case for rest on any day? It seems obedience would require us to worship the day God set apart because it has not been changed (unless you count man's changes?

    1. My point is that the principles behind the command still apply, but since we are no longer under the Old Covenant, only those commands in Mosaic law that explicitly address morality, i.e. the code written on our hearts (see Romans chapter 2), apply in a legalistic sense. I don't think it's wrong to honor the day on Saturday, but, as Jesus showed, he wasn't concerned with going against the cultural norms.

Also, the Fourth Commandment does not command worship, as you implied in your comment. It commands rest. Now, you may make the case that in our rest, we worship God, but if you're thinking of corporate worship, that is incorrect. In fact, the Hebrew was not even supposed to leave his or her tent on the Sabbath.

Check out Colossians 2 for more.

  4. You give many valid reasons for Sabbath rest. I valued them as a Sabbath-keeper. While there would be value in resting any day in seven, God must have had a reason for specifying which day to rest and worship, one of which would have been because of it was at the end of his creation week, and another would be that Jesus rested on the seventh day of our weekly cycle. Hoping your book and your work helps many people.

    1. A big reason for the Sabbath commandment was to set Israel apart from all of the surrounding pagan nations. None of the others had the impetus for, or custom of, rest on the seventh day because they did not submit to Yahweh and the creation narrative.

When the gospel opened up to the gentiles, some of the adherents of the Way (the Jewish sect who recognized Jesus as the Messiah) attempted to impose the Law of Moses (which includes the 4th commandment) onto the gentile converts.

As Paul pointed out, this practice is not in accordance with God's plan and serves to nullify the work of Christ on the cross. Does this mean we should throw out the first five books of the Bible? No! But laws contained therein that do not directly deal with morality ought not be enforced as though they are demanded by God today.

There are valid reasons for circumcision (e.g. health reasons), but that does not mean it is a sin for a Christ-follower to remain uncircumcised.

  5. Hello sir,
I am writing because I did your book entitled, Do Not Work, this was an attempt to present a dissertation proposal. I would love to gleam from the knowledge God has blessed pour out upon you.

The problem I am contemplating how Sunday always arise in this western culture as people seemed stuck on doing things their way. Sabbath isn't about picking a day but accepting the 7th day.
Sir, how to display the information of Creation Order so that people comprehend how God reveals His character allowing love to draw humanity towards Him.
Oh yes I did enjoy the book and looking to others as my work is to create a curriculum for rural pastors suffering with burnout by processing the rhythms of Creation through the obedience of the Word by faith not a scientific approach. Remember the Sabbath day.
    Thank you,
    Dale Hardy
