The Real Reason You Feel Incomplete

Admit it.

Sometimes you feel like something's missing. You feel like there's something or someone out there that will make you feel whole.

Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

You can't really pinpoint it, but you feel it; you feel incomplete.

We Are Unfinished

Have you ever heard a musical scale?

Listen to one where I stop on the seventh note of a C Major:

Doesn't it sound weird? That last note is begging to be resolved by the eighth and final note of the scale.

Listen to it again, but this time I'll finish it out.

Do you hear how the eighth note releases the tension with the completion of the scale?

Humans are just like that penultimate note in the scale.
We are unfinished. We cannot stand on our own. We are begging to be resolved by something or someone.

And that someone is God.

Mankind without God is like that second-to-last note hanging out there. He is incomplete.

The Beginning and End are the Same

God created us on the sixth day, the penultimate day of the week. Then he completed the week by resting.

This is why seven is the number of completion in the Bible.

But what happens when we try to live without God--when we try to do things on our own? We see corruption, hate, and pride. We see selfishness.

So it is no coincidence that in the book of Revelation the mark of the beast is 666.

Six is the number of man.

But just like the second-to-last note in a C Major scale, we cannot stand alone. We need resolution and completion from our Creator, from the God who loves us.

Here's the coolest part:

God says He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega (Rev. 22:13); a musical scale begins and ends on the same note (just an octave higher).

The beginning and the end are the same: The LORD God Almighty.

So the real reason you feel incomplete is because you are; you were made to be that way. We were made to rely on Him for completeness:

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

That's great news because we longer have to be insecure about feeling unfinished. Just like the eighth note of a major scale, God will fill the void if only we let Him in.
